We're off!

After almost a month of very impatient waiting, we finally received our travel dates and will be meeting our daughter in less than two weeks. We waited almost 9 months (appropriately enough) for Claire's referral, and that wait was really quite bearable compared to waiting for our travel dates. Once we saw Claire's little face, we wanted to leave that night to go get her.

One thing that's helped us with the wait is getting updates on Claire from another family, The Yehs, who are in Astana now adopting two adorable little ones, the youngest of which, Anelle, is one of Claire's buddies. They're in the same group at the babyhouse. The Yehs have sent us updates like, "She smiled at us today" and "We saw her roll over," and while that might not seem like much, those little updates had us calling our families and yelling, "Claire can smile!!" and "She ROLLS OVER! Call Harvard!"

As much as we're looking forward to meeting Claire, living in Kazakhstan for six weeks will be an adjustment. The weather situation alone is daunting. Going from the temperate Alabama winter to the tundra of Kazakhstan is absolutely going to be one extreme to the other, but we're ready with a ridiculously large pile of clothing that I can't even look at without sweating. The temperature in Astana yesterday was -15 F, a temperature that would without question have everyone in Birmingham stockpiling canned goods and speculating about whether this is the end of humanity.

On top of freezing to death, we'll also be missing the Jayhawks in the NCAA tourney. Claire has tiny KU socks for good luck, so it's definitely our year. Rock Chalk.
